Jacob moved to Westmoreland Co, PA with his parents when only about 3 or 4 years old. In 1796 he, with wife Mary Magdalena, moved to Butler Co, PA. He built and became the proprietor of a hotel there. He came to be known as "the pioneer" of the town of Butler. The Marquis de Lafayette once stayed in their hotel. Jacob enlisted during the war of 1812 and became an Ensign in the 138th Pennsylvania Regulars. He was active in political affairs. At various times he was a Justice of the Peace, a Prothonotary, a County Commissioner, the Chief Burgess of the Borough, and a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature. In 1797, they moved to Butler Co, PA, where Jacob operated a hotel known as the "Mechling House".

Jacob married Mary Magdalena Drumm, daughter of Simon Drumm Sr and Susanna Lauffer, on 30 Dec 1794. (Mary Magdalena Drumm was born on 20 Mar 1777 in Old Sewickley Settlement, Westmoreland Co, PA and died on 14 May 1852 in Butler County, Pennsylvania.)
