John served in the Civil War, but only the last year of the war, because he was only sixteen years old when he enlisted. The father of Catherine Miller Zoole reported that John was a drummer boy (Catherine Miller Zoole).

John married Sarah Anderson. (Sarah Anderson was born in 1850 and died on 12 Jun 1914.)
