bullet  General Notes:

In 1826, Joseph Esch married Sara Youngkin, both of them having been born in the same year 1808. According to a Deed date May 10,1828, filed in Northamton Co., Joseph bought 110 acres and 86 perches (110.5375) acres from the estate of Henry Kohl, located in Allen Township of Northamton County. The next year instead of farming the land, they started selling it in roughly 9 acre parcels.

Joseph Esch Obituary 1898 - contributed by Barry B. Brown

Joseph Esch, one of Indiana County's oldest citizens, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jacob Overdorff, of Brush Valley Twp, on Saturday even, 28 May. Mr. Esch was born in the eastern part of the state over 90 years ago, and for the past 70 (should be 60) years has been a resident of Indiana County. He was a good man and highly esteemed by all who know him. His wife died six years ago. He was the father of 11 children(actually there were 12 children, but Hanna Esch died just before her 4th birthday, and was buried in the cemetery of St Matthew's German Reformed church in Kunkletown, Monroe Co., PA). six of whom are living: Rev John Esch, of Dempseytown: Adam of Cambria County; Joseph, who resides in Ohio; William of Westmoreland County: Mrs. M.A. Overdorff, of Blairsvilled and Mrs Jacob Overdorff of Brush Valley. The funeral services were held in the Bethel Church on Monday morning, May 30 at 10:00 by Rev. D.R. Miller. Mr. Esch was a member of the above mentioned church for about 50 years.

According to family information by Pearl Ellen (Moore) Esch, Joseph was a gunsmith during the Civil War. Since he was born in 1808 he certainly was not a soldier in that war. However his Sons Levi and Edward did service as solders in the Civil Ward.

Joseph married Sarah Youngkin, daughter of Henry Youngkin and Anna Maria Overpeck, on 13 Aug 1826 in Easton At The County Court House. (Sarah Youngkin was born in 1808, died in 1892 in Brush Valley, Indiana Co., PA and was buried in 1892 in Dutch Bethel Cemetery.)

bullet  Marriage Notes:

As you can see from Salina's birthdate and the date of marriage of her parents, Sarah Younkin was 4 months pregnant when she married Joseph, which may account for the reason that they were married in Easton at the county courthouse rather than in a church
