He retired in 1973 from Copco Steel of South Bend and for the past two years, was a part-time employee of Culver Military Academy. (He died of a heart attack.)

John married Edith Fern Wilhelm, daughter of Melvin Roy Wilhelm and Nora Estella Fry, on 18 Jan 1933 in First M.E. Church, Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. (Edith Fern Wilhelm was born on 1 Dec 1912 in Fulton County, Indiana, died on 13 Nov 1999 in Miller's Merry Manor, Culver, Marshall County, Indiana and was buried on 16 Nov 1999 in Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F Poplar Grove Cemetery, Culver, Marshall County, Indiana.)
