Soon after they were married, they moved to Grant County, Wisconsin, USA as their first child, Emily (Emma Belle) was born there. James and Adaline had three children. James and his wife were divorced before 1866 because at that time she married a wealthy farmer, Enos Woodfuff. Adaline, her new husband and three children moved to S. Dixon Township, Lee County, Illinois, USA. James returned to Wisconsin. He homesteaded near Merrill in Lincoln County. In 1882, he remarried.
James married Adaline Doty, daughter of Robert Doty and Isabel Carswell. (Adaline Doty was born on 13 Sep 1834 in Grant County, Wisconsin, USA.)
